The ‘Pareto principle,’ also known as the ‘law of the vital few,’ states that “80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.”
The common saying that 20% of the people do 80% of the work expresses the Pareto principle.
This law or principle has proven true in many circumstances!
The decision to go to war and the eventual outcome of wars often lies with a few individuals.
Just a few people have altered the fate of entire nations through their actions.
The fact that is plain in modern life and history is that only a few people end up determining the fate of millions.
God knows this. He has always been keen to choose a vital minority for Himself to carry out His counsel.
The question then is: “What does God look for when choosing the vital few?
Commitment
Commitment means sacrifice, i.e., giving up on other competing interests to get the job done!
God is interested in those who are fully committed to Him and His purpose when deciding the fate of nations.
This is a very basic issue!
Even nations won’t choose foreign nationals for critical roles. They won’t have them in their national armies or intelligence services.
They would rather choose people whose allegiance can be trusted.
The same applies to God!
Our commitment to God shows in the choices we make when it is inconvenient to serve God. This happens when other issues we care about clash with God’s desire for us.
Our choice at those times will show God (and us, too) the depth of our commitment to Him.
After breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”…. John 21:15a (NLT)
Another key factor that determines who God will invite into His inner chamber is:
Obedience
There is only one authority in the whole universe: the Lord God Almighty!
Those who walk intimately with God understand the necessity of complete obedience.
Obedience helps everyone who loves God to pull in the same direction.
When there is disobedience, there is disunity.
The next criterion God looks out for is:
Availability
God uses men who are available, NOT necessarily the most talented or the most qualified.
People who decide to spend their time waiting on God will be selected for the 20% elite group.
Waiting on God means making your schedule to be available for God.
Availability is being present for the Master’s service. You must be there unless it is totally impossible.
Joshua followed Moses when God summoned Moses to give him the Ten Commandments. God didn’t call Joshua; He called Moses.
But He also noticed Joshua made himself available. Joshua waited on the mountain for Moses to finish talking to God [Exodus 24:12–13].
When it was time to choose who would take over from Moses, God was very clear who He wanted:
The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death is near. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him. ”… Deuteronomy 31:14
Finally, one last rule that God searches for is:
Faithfulness
Faithfulness is a state of being reliable.
Reliability!
Can God depend on you?
Can He count on you to keep your words?
“Who may stay in God’s temple or live on the holy mountain of the LORD? Only those who obey God and do as they should… and they keep their promises, no matter what the cost…” (Psalms 15:1–5 CEV)
If you want God to count you and to be in His council, then buff your CV to meet the above expectations.
